In an effort to help very low income families with their utility bills that are out of options, the Atmos Energy Share the Warmth donation service is created. It uses contributions from the public, referrals from local agencies in Kansas, and fund raisers all in an effort to help seniors or the vulnerable pay their energy bills.
Anyone seeking to either apply for assistance or to contribute can call the company at the number below. Also, many social service agencies in the community also often have information on the process. While of course any person or organization can donate to this service, only a certain qualified customer can apply for assistance for paying their energy bills.
Atmos Energy Share the Warmth was created to help the less fortunate that are facing a crisis. Maybe they are out of heat, or their power is about to be shut off and they have a medical condition. Those who are assisted need to have a low income (often in the area of living in poverty) and also be faced with a crisis. The customer also needs to have very low (or no) savings, can't be helped from programs such as LIHEAP, and they need to meet any number of other conditions.
Since Share the Warmth does rely on donations from across Kansas, the application process is extensive. There will be proof of income, residency, and identification needed. This is not only for the person seeking assistance with their utilities, but it is required for all household members. There is also proof of age, if a disability or illness is occurring, and more needed.
Donations from the community for Atmos Energy Share the Warmth are intended to help in a crisis only, and the aid is for those that are facing unusual circumstances. This means that funds will be used to help a senior citizen that could lose their heat and be faced with a health risk. Or if they were to have their electricity turned off during the summer and face a heat issue, then a donation may help them with their bills.

Other clients of Share the Warmth may be a family with a sick family member, such as a child. Or if the applicant has some other exceptional hardship that is causing them to struggle, then those individuals may also receive assistance.
As noted, households in the Kansas Atmos Energy service territory can call the company to apply. Or they can learn about who is accepting and/or processing applications. There are some cases in which local social service agencies which may partner with Atmos Energy Share the Warmth on applying and screening candidates. So the process may change.
Once the donations are used up, then no other households can be assisted until more contributions come from the community. The amount of money to pay out is limited. Also, the program will normally only pay a portion of a utility bill for a month or so. This is not a long term solution.
