Utility Bill Assistance

Anoka Municipal Utility Round up for Change utility bill assistance

Low income families (or those in a financial crisis) may be able to get emergency utility bill assistance from the Anoka Municipal Utility Round up for Change program. Using donations, the financial aid for energy bills can help prevent disconnection. Funds can pay for light, heat, electric, gas, and any other utilities that are provided by AMU.

Applications are needed and funds are limited. Only a small number of people can get help. Donations as part of Round up for Change can be used to offer short term energy help. Some examples of who is assisted include:

-Senior citizens living on a fixed income.
-Someone that is ill and/or in the hospital.
-A family with the primary wage earner that has lost their job.
-The disabled or someone filing for SSI or SSDI.
-A family recovering from death of a spouse.

Anoka Municipal Utility Round up for Change can assist in other situations too. The point being that the financial assistance for utility bills is for emergencies only. It is not for long term support. Applications for Round Up need to have some form of exception reason for applying for help.

The phone number to call to apply at for utility assistance is below. Customer service can go over the application process as well as any other assistance programs that may be applicable. Examples of other resources include payment plans, which can help spread out any past due utility bills. A budget plan is also an option for saving money, as it spreads heating and cooling bills out over the course of a year. All of those assistance programs are in addition to the AMU Round Up donation service.

Donations and tax free contributions to AMU Round up for Change

This service runs on the generosity of the community. Contributions come from many places. Most of the money for the Anoka Municipal Utility Round up for Change assistance program is from employees as well as management. There are also funds from individual private and businesses customers, local charities and non-profits, as well as others.

One time donations are accepted. They can be mailed in with the monthly utility bill. It needs to be noted that the money is for the AMU Round Up program.

Another way to donate is to round up monthly utility bills. This will be to the next highest dollar amount. The incremental money is used to fund Anoka Municipal Utility Round up for Change, and if thousands of customers (or more) enter into a round up program then the amount of funds do add up. It makes a difference for struggling families, and it can help many keep their utilities on.

When donating to the program, the donor will get an income tax deduction. This will ensure the net cost to the donor is less, as the tax break offsets some of the cost. Another benefit is that 100% of the money goes to less fortunate customers so they can pay their utilities. Donations are voluntary as well, and they can be stopped or started at anytime.
