Assistance is still available for income-eligible customers who are struggling with their bills, or who currently have a past-due utility bill when protection from utility shutoff ends in the spring.
New Mexico state law protects low and moderate income-eligible households from having their utility service shutoff between November 15 and March 15 of each year. So even if you are behind on paying your bill, or miss some payments, the law ensures your service stays on so you can stay warm over the winter months.
New Mexico's largest utility, the Public Service Company of New Mexico, says it continues to offer assistance through the Good Neighbor Fund. Aid is available to families and individuals year-round while donations last.
The Good Neighbor Fund provides a once-a-year free cash grant to help eligible customers retire past due PNM bills.
There are some criteria that need to be met in order to receive aid. Eligibility for shut off protection is determined by the state Human Services Department. The office will review the number of people living in the household and the total household income level, and applicants who have an income of up to 150 percent of the federal level can apply for the fund.
