Utility Bill Assistance

Assistance from Southwest Gas donation Energy Share program.

Southwest Gas, working with the Salvation Army in Nevada, collects donations from the community in an effort to assist low income customers. The money raised is limited, comes with a strict application process, and will only be used for assisting with a crisis. More details on the program, and how to contribute or apply, are below.

The primary emergency fund from Southwest Gas in Nevada is known as Energy Share. As donations and funding levels allow, the program will pay out assistance for utility bills to qualified people with unexpected financial difficulties. This can include different scenarios, but the most common reasons can include the loss of a job, reduction in income or a short term, medical emergency.

In many cases this will be seniors and low-income families with children. Those, and the disabled within the community, are some of the main beneficiaries of Energy Share contributions.

The program does depend on donations. If you can afford to participate, please do so. Every dollar that someone contributes is fully tax-deductible as well. What Southwest Gas will do as well is for those customers that are donating to Energy Share, they will receive a summary statement of donations for the preceding year on their January bill. This will help them file their taxes properly and ensure they have the back up they need. One hundred percent of all donations are used to help Nevada families and individuals in need of help.

The Salvation Army is a key partner. They can provide information on the program processes applications, and also pay out the funds. All donations to Energy Share are managed and distributed by The Salvation Army in your town or city.

To apply, keep in mind that the Energy Share program from Southwest Gas program was created with the understanding that there are times when customers simply can't make ends meet. So the Salvation Army, using funds from the program, offers one-time emergency assistance to those in need due to economic hardship.

When applying, proof of hardship is needed as well as information on what will be done to regain stability. The applicant may need ID, proof of income, copies of expenses such as a lease or mortgage payment, and more. They need proof for all household members as well. Once again, Energy Share is a limited scope program for one time use in a crisis. It is not the same thing as some other government resources, such as LIHEAP.

A Salvation Army case manager will review your application and determine eligibility. They will also offer funding if the person or low income family is approved. Call a local center to apply for assistance.
