If you want to give back to the community, the Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) Dollar Donation Fund can provide you the means to do that. It is a program that can help your neighbors pay their utility bills, if they need help. It is a easy way for people to either receive, or provide, financial assistance to families and seniors who find it hard to pay their monthly energy bills.
It is run in partnership with the Fuel Fund of Maryland. That organization is a non-profit that is based in Maryland and it provides emergency assistance and cash grants for people in a crisis as well as low-income BGE families. The funds are for those who cannot pay their electric, natural gas, utility, or heating oil bills. Funds can also be used to pay wood, kerosene, and propane costs. Basically it can assist with paying any type of energy cost or fuel source.
You can contribute as little or as much as you would like. The BGE Dollar Donation Fund allows individuals to choose to donate an amount of their choosing to the Fuel Fund of Maryland. You can contribute a $1, $2, $10, or $20 a month...basically as much money as you want to. One time contributions can be made too. BGE will add that amount to your monthly utility bill. When the person who is donating pays the bill in full the energy company will forward your contribution to the Fuel Fund of Maryland.
One of the key advantages to using this program is that all of the customer's donations to the state's Fuel Fund will be tax-deductible. In addition, the non-profit will send each donor a summary of their monthly and yearly donations at the end of the year. This will help people file their taxes properly. In addition, individuals can stay enrolled for as long (or as short a period) as they would like. You can withdraw your donations, change the monthly amount, or take other steps. The program is very flexible.

Customers of Baltimore Gas and Electric have been very generous in their support of the non-profit Fuel Fund. While it will vary based on the year, in general thousands of people contribute to the program every year. One hundred percent of any contributions will be sent directly to the Maryland Fuel Fund, and your generous contribution will not be used to pay administrative costs. Every single dollar that you decide to donate will be tax-deductible. However you should be sure to properly file your taxes and/or check with an account to ensure the law does not change. To simplify record keeping, the Fuel Fund will send you a summary of your donations.
If you can spare a little money each month (whether a dollar or some greater amount) to help your neighbors in need, then please do consider the Dollar Donation Fund. It provides people with the ability to turn good intentions into good works.
