Utility Bill Assistance

City Utilities of Springfield Project Share utility assistance

City Utilities of Springfield Project Share provides a way for people to not only give back to the less fortunate, but it also allows customers the ability to get assistance for paying their utility bills when they are faced with a short term crisis. It meets both of these aggressive goals by accepting donations from businesses and individuals at the same time as providing financial aid for energy bills.

City Utilities of Springfield fully supports this endeavor. The company not only allows the program to help its customers, but they also provide matching grants to it as well as coordinate agencies in the community. In addition, customers as well as management from the company will also donate to Project Share as well. They too recognize that it is important to help less fortunate customers keep up with their utilities and to help them pay their bills.

Any donations made will be tax deductible on the households income tax statements. They also also be provided with a year end summary that shows exactly what they contributed to make it easier for their record keeping. Also, City Utilities of Springfield will allow any amount to be contributed. If someone wants to donate $1, $5, or even just a certain amount of cents on their monthly bill, this is acceptable too.

All of these contributions will be administered by both City Utilities of Springfield and local non-profits. Together they will accept requests for help from the community. Many senior citizens may need assistance with their utility bills due to the unexpected cost of a medication, or maybe a struggling family was faced with a medical crisis. These are just some examples of when a customer may apply for help with their utility bills, but there are many others.

The donations made to City Utilities of Springfield Project Share will allow only a portion of a bill to be paid by the program. This service will not pay for the total expense. The customer also needs to contribute, and Project Share is not intended to be a substitute for programs such as LIHEAP. So it is not a long term, poverty fighting service.

The aid is for people with a one time, short term emergency. Also, priority is given to vulnerable households, meaning the elderly, disabled, or homes/apartments with a sick child. These are the customers that would be most at risk if their electricity was disconnected, so the assistance will mostly flow to these groups. However anyone can apply, but the funding is very limited. More information, including the phone number to apply at, is below.

What this also means is that for anyone that donates, they can know that each and every application is screened closely. The financial aid is only for those City of Springfield customers that are deserving of it, and the money will not be wasted. This should encourage people from the community to contribute to this utility bill assistance program.
