Utility Bill Assistance

ConEdison Energy Share utility bill assistance.

In an effort to help low income customers, ConEdison created the Energy Share energy bill assistance program. It was created using donations from the public, employees, and matching grants from stock holders in the company. ConEdison Energy Share also relies on key partners in the community, ranging from charities to the Department of Human Services in NYC as well as each and every local county.

The goal is to provide short term, emergency utility bill assistance to those customers who are struggling. The donations that are made to the program can help a low income family keep their lights or heat on, and otherwise prevent a disconnection of their service. This can even help safe a vulnerable customer’s life, as a parent with a small child needs their heat/power as does as senior citizen, someone with a medical condition, or the vulnerable. The Consolidated Edison Energy Share program is but one more of the options that is available in the community

Donations to Energy Share

They can be made in three forms, as noted below. All of the money (100%) goes to the needy in the community for paying their energy bills. None of the money raised goes to administrative costs. The ways to make a tax free/deductible contribution include the following:

  • 1)Round up each and every monthly bill to the next nearest dollar amount. The incremental addition goes to fund the program. Round up can be started or stopped at any time.
  • 2)Make a one-time contribution to ConEdison Energy Share, and this can be done at any time.
  • 3)Customers can also participate in fund raisers, and help charities or other groups raise money.

One of the benefits to a donation is that ConEdison matches them. They use both corporate grants as well as contributions from employees (management as well as staff workers) to provide even more money to this assistance program. All of the donations as well as matching grants do make a difference in the community, with the funds going towards energy bills.

Applications and financial aid from Consolidated Edison Energy Share

Energy Share is an emergency utility assistance program. It provides one time support, once per year. This is not an ongoing program in which customers can continue to apply month in and month out. Another item to note is since is relies on donations to provide this form of energy bill help, funding is limited. Most charitable donations actually occur during the holiday season, so this is when the program is at peak funding.

When applying for financial help from the program, bring a copy of income (employment, government aid, child support, etc.). The application process also requires proof of residency as well as another utility assistance programs that may be currently enrolled into, including LIHEAP or weatherization. As the ConEdison Energy Share program is a solution, but not the primary one. Many applications need further support, and that can include everything from public assistance to employment or budget counseling.
