One of the main energy assistance programs offered by Delmarva Power is the Good Neighbor Energy. The utility company offers this service to the low income and less fortunate. The funding comes from donations from the community, including individuals, church fund raisers, businesses, and even matching grants from Delmarva. The program provides assistance for utility bills and also provides customers the ability to donate and give back to society.
The Salvation Army in Delaware and Delmarva Power work together on this resource. They could also involve other non-profits and charities. If there is funding available, the program can offer energy bill assistance to its low-income and senior customers.
People and businesses from the community can donate as well. Contribute as little or as much as you want. Even as little as $1. You can donate on a monthly recurring basis or make a one time contribution. The Salvation Army will also collect funds from the community. Any money you do donate will be tax deductible on both your state of Delaware and federal government income tax returns. To contribute to the Good Neighbor Energy fund, please contact one of these offices:
-The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 712, Wilmington, DE 19899-0712. Dial (302) 472-0750.
-Another option is the Salvation Army in Maryland. This has an address of P.O. Box 3235, Salisbury, MD 21802-3235. For more information, dial the center at (410) 749-3077.
-The Harford Community Action Agency also collects donations and can process applications. The address is 33 W. Courtland Street, Bel Air, MD 21014-3701. Phone number is (410) 939-3535 x 22.
-Or contact the Good Neighbor Energy Fund at Cecil Heating Assistance Program, P.O. Box 195, Elkton, MD 21922-0195. For more details on this location, dial (410) 996-0241.
You can add a donation of any amount to your monthly bill or make an online payment. Just add an amount to be deducted. Or call one of the non-profits above and ask them about the Delmarva Power donation program. You can stop by a center or coordinate with the Salvation Army on your donation too.
All contributions will be remitted to the Salvation Army, who administers it and processes applications. Know that your hard earned money will go to those who need it. All donated funds will be allocated to the Good Neighbor program and none will be used for administration costs of the program.
If you need assistance, call any one of those agencies as well. The money will only be paid out if you meet qualifications and can prove the need as well. This is a one time program and is not an ongoing government type subsidy. This should also minimize the concerns of those individuals and businesses that choose to donate as they will know their funds will go to a good use.
