Utility Bill Assistance

Donate to Project SHARE in Alabama

The Alabama Project SHARE program relies on voluntary contributions from people in the Mobile community and across the state. The American Red Cross administers the program, and all money will be sent to low income disabled and elderly individuals. Funds are used for offering utility bill assistance to those customers who have no other options available to them.

Project SHARE, which stands for Service to Help Alabamians with Relief on Energy, is a program that was created in the 1980s. It was originally designed as a partnership between Alabama Power Company and the American Red Cross. However since that timeframe it is expanded in scope.

The program is paid for by donations and contributions made by the customers of all the utility and gas companies across the state. Many businesses and non-profits also contribute, and some will even hold fund raisers and drives to help raise more money and awareness. It is a great way for people to give back to their community, so please help those in need by donating to Project SHARE. You can donate as little (or as much!) as you would like to through your energy provider.

Now, a number of other electric cooperatives and municipalities have joined into the program, including Alabama Gas Corporation. In total, over 20 gas and utility companies participate in Project SHARE. Thousands of lower income, disabled, and elderly customers receive financial assistance from it and would have had their power shut off if not for the aid from this service. So your tax free donations have a noticeable benefit.

The American Red Cross in Alabama administers it for the state. The energy assistance program will generally open up for enrollment for low-income elderly or disabled individuals in the January time frame, and that is when applications are processed.

Appointment will need to be made, and they are usually taken on Mondays and Tuesdays. However always call in advance for details, and to see if there is even funding available.

As the main non-profit organization responsible for providing Project SHARE funds, an American Red Cross representative will interview applicants. After the appointment referenced above is made, an interview will occur. Those interviews will generally be on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and will be scheduled for later in the month or in February.

To qualify for utility bill assistance, the head of the household must be receiving a disability check and/or at least sixty-two years of age or older. In addition, the total family income must fall within certain guidelines depending on the number of people in the household. For those who qualify for Project SHARE, payments will be made directly to the utility company.

To apply, donate, or get more information, call your local American Red Cross office. Or for the Gulf coast region, dial (251) 544-6100.
