One of the main assistance programs available to CenterPoint Energy Oklahoma customers in Lend a helping hand. It is a community wide resource that relies on donations from people and the company. It is also offered in partnership with non-profits and charities such as the Salvation Army.
The program offers utility bill assistance for income qualified customers in need of help. Over the years peoples donations have assisted thousands of struggling CenterPoint Energy customers. Many of the people who are supported include senior citizens, customers with disabilities, and families with young children. Applicants need to meet low income conditions and usually be faced with some type of unexpected crisis or hardship. The program is a last resort for the less fortunate.
As indicated, these programs are mostly paid for by donations from generous customers. This includes businesses and just regular, every day residents. People can contribute as much as they would like, and the amount can be conveniently added to your regular monthly utility bill. Or some people decide to make a one time donation. Regardless, any contribution is greatly appreciated and will make the difference for someone that is struggling. All donations are tax-deductible.
Many of the people using the donation program and applying for help have never done so before. They are faced with a short term crisis. So the assistance is not some type of long term, never ending government benefit.
CenterPoint Energy gives the donations to local non-profits in Oklahoma, and that is mainly the Salvation Army. The non-profit will use the money to fund programs that help those at risk neighbors (such as seniors) manage their natural gas expenses.

Other assistance can be provided by CenterPoint Energy. Customer service and other representatives from the company will often work with local energy assistance agencies to offer Community Outreach Programs across Oklahoma. This is above and beyond the Lend a hand resource indicated above.
Low income customers can visit an outreach site or call the company in order to receive personal one on one help from a CenterPoint Energy representative. They will discuss your situation and discuss payment plans and programs they may qualify for, including donations.
In general, the company believes that it is their job to lend a helping hand to the poor. They offer joint programs with customers to help them keep their power or restore their disconnected service. To learn more on this or other assistance, call 866-275-5265.
