Cash grants and financial assistance is provided in Florida from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. This utility bill program is open to income qualified families and individuals who need help in paying their utility bills. While funds are limited, the federal government LIHEAP program assists thousands of families every year.
People who are faced with a crisis may be able to qualify for a once-per-year utility payment. This emergency, or crisis component, is offered for individuals who have a utility bill that shows an amount past due, or for individuals in Florida who have a shut-off notice on their account. LIHEAP may also assist if you need money to pay for the connection fees or deposit on a new account, or re-establishing service. Grants can be used for either winter heating bills, or more commonly to help pay your air conditioning expenses during the hot Florida summer.
While funding does vary, eligible Florida households may receive a credit payment up to $600 from LIHEAP which can be applied to your account. Interested families will be permitted to apply at most twice per year, which will be during the winter and summer months.
The current charges that you owe to a Florida energy company can be paid by LIHEAP as well. This is considered the “regular” component. If you are interested, individuals can apply at most once per year. Usually a qualified applicant will be provided up to $300 to pay their electric or cooling bills. Call your local community action agency (see below) for more information or to apply. While you wait for this money you will still need to continue to pay your regular monthly utility bill.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will offer eligible applicants a credit on their account. The LIHEAP program is funded through the federal government in partnership with the Florida Department of Community Affairs Division of Housing and Community Development, and in a typical year over 50,000 families qualify.
