Utility Bill Assistance

Lakeland Electric Project Care utility donation program.

One way to help the less fortunate is to contribute to the Lakeland Electric Project Care program. It provides assistance to low income families for their utility bills. Of particular focus is on seniors, the disabled and those with a one-time crisis.

The program is funded mostly by a Round Up type service that customers and businesses contribute to. This means that if an applicant’s utility bill for a certain month is $80.45, and if the customer is in the round up program, they will pay $81 for it. The balance of 55 cents goes to pay for Project Care. This is the donation amount and is tax deductible.

So in effect, each month the donation amount you provide will vary, depending on the amount of your electric bill. Also, because of the way the round up concept works, the maximum amount someone can contribute is $0.99 and the minimum is $0.01. At most, the maximum any customer can contribute in a year is $11.88.
For those seeking assistance, there is an application process. The funds and scope of this Lakeland Electric service is limited. However it may be able to prevent a disconnection of power or help in other ways as well. As noted, it is for customers over the age of 60 and/or the disabled. Any aid is one time only, and this is not a government subsidy like LIHEAP.

After all, Project Care was developed to assist qualified low income people with paying their electric bills when they are qualified. It will have other benefits, such as improving the quality of life of customers. Dozens of households in their Florida service territory may benefit from this each and every year.

Note that Round Up is a voluntary program. For those who sign it, their contribution will be tax deductible in Florida. In addition, it allows Lakeland Electric customers an opportunity to help low-income disabled or senior members of the community. It allows customers the ability to automatically round up their utility bills to the next highest dollar amount. So people ca give back to the community by helping so called at risk families that also meet low income levels.
