Tens of thousands of Louisiana families benefit from the LIHEAP program each and every year. The official name of the federal government funded resource is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, however it is often called LIHEAP.
Low-income households, in particular those who pay a large percentage of their income towards utilities, usually benefit from this resource. Any type of grants or financial benefits paid out are based on several conditions including the number of people who live in the residence, total household income, and the total monthly amount of their bills. While applications are processed by community action agencies (see below) on a first come, first serve basis, some people do get priority. Households in Louisiana with members over 60 years of age, low income households with children age five and under, or the disabled are usually first in line for any available assistance.
The Louisiana version of LIHEAP can provide up to three disbursements per year, with some focus being on assisting with summer cooling bills. Funding is available in every town, city, and parish in Louisiana.
The program operates on a national basis, and millions of individuals receive assistance every year. Families receive help with paying bills, energy-related home repairs, or assistance in a crisis. This can include emergencies such as a broken cooling system, an unusually hot Louisiana summer, or a crisis component of LIHEAP can help Louisiana families who are faced with a disconnection.
