While limited in scope and funding, the Lend a Hand energy bill assistance program is an option for struggling customers in the city limits. All applicants and funds only go to families (or individuals) who need help paying their utility bills and that meet the program criteria, including low income, live within the city, and more.
The resource is limited in funds and availability. In general, only dozens of city residents are heled each year. A big reason why is Lend a Hand relies on donations from the community as well as a grant that comes from the Lumberton City Council. If the council stops approving the grant, or donations drop off, less people will be assisted.
There are 3 organizations, both government and charitable, that help administer the service. They include the Community Center, the city council, as well as the Robeson County Church which is based in Lumberton. Of course since the donation grant comes from the city taxpayer dollars are also involved. In addition, one time contributions come from the general public so they also help keep the service operating.
Other general funding can come from the United Way as well as the federal government Emergency Food and Shelter program. Anyone interested in donating to Lend a Hand to help city of Lumberton families pay their electric bills, they can donate at City Hall which is at 500 N. Cedar St. Both checks can be mailed in for one time, tax deductible contributions or monthly recurring donations can be made.
Funds from the City of Lumberton Lend a Hand service
As noted, it is limited. There may only be tens of or dozens of needy families helped. As the amount of money to pay utility bills is very limited. The Lend a Hand energy bill assistance program will first of all pay out a maximum of $150. This is a monthly limit. However that does not mean that a city resident can apply month after month; in that case it may be more difficult to get approved.
