Utility Bill Assistance

Donation program from NSTAR for utility bills

Massachusetts and families in the northeast can continue to benefit from utility bill assistance programs offered and funded by the National Grid Foundation. The company helps people in the community by lending a warm helping hand and other support.

Federal government funding varies from year to year, and with the lack of recent federal funding for heating and utility programs, the National Grid Foundation will try to provide more contributions than a normal year. While typically the non-profit organization gives $75,000 or so per year, when the government cuts back, or when the temperature in Massachusetts is colder than normal, the organization will try to increase funding.

National Grid works with the agencies such as Merrimack Valley's emergency assistance program as well as the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and others. Many groups play an essential role by providing fuel and utility assistance to the neediest and low income members of the community. So the National Grid Foundation is glad to work with other non-profits and charities in order to lend a so called warm helping hand to those who need assistance so that they don't have to choose between paying for their energy bill or some other needs they may have.

The foundation provides funds to local non-profits. For example, the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence in Boston, Quincy Community Action Program, along with City Mission in Boston, Ecumenical Social Action Committee (ESAC) in Jamaica Plain, Cambridge Family and Children Services, Community Teamwork in Lowell, Newton Community Service, and Tri-CAP in Malden have received cash from Nation Grid in the past, and they provide the money for utility bills.

The donated money from the foundation goes a long way towards helping the low income and less fortunate. The Quincy Community Action Program has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from National Grid in the past as well for weatherization programs and utility assistance.

Almost every year, the funding comes at an important time for clients and the needy. For those families and seniors who qualify for utility bill assistance from the government, in many cases that money is simply not enough to get them through the winter, so the extra money from National Grid helps. The non-profits above are always grateful to the National Grid foundation for recognizing the urgent need of the needy.

More money and donations are always needed. So while the funding is helpful, each and every non-profit organization in Massachusetts is still looking to raise money to assist the needy. Give to the United Way or the Salvation Army to donate. Or if you want to apply, interested clients will have to apply, provide information on whereabouts and their income level in order to be connected to a non-profit.
