The state of Nevada offers several resources and programs that can assist families with their utility bills. They include:
The Nevada Energy Assistance Program will provide assistance with energy and utility bills to income qualified households. The assistance program helps almost 20,000 households each and every year. They provide a grant that is used to pay utility bills, and the average size is $800. Funding for the this program is provided from the federal government and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Money collected from the Universal Energy Charge (UEC) and the Nevada Fund for Energy Assistance and Conservation is also distributed. Residents may call 1-866-846-2009 to learn more or apply.
Green Cross has a program that allows households that are currently using electrically operated medical equipment to receive advance notification from power companies of scheduled electric outages for service maintenance. If power is expected to be turned off, NV Energy will take the steps necessary to restore power as quickly as possible to these customers who can’t afford to be without power.
Special Assistance Fund for Energy (SAFE) distributes grants and funds through social service agencies and charities to help needy families and individuals with paying their utility bills. This utility bill assistance program is funded through both individual and corporate donations which are matched up to $100,000 by utility companies.
Third-party protection will help families prevent service disconnects due to either lost, forgotten or misplaced electric bills. It works as the program will notify a person when a friend or relative's electric service may be in jeopardy of being turned off because of an unpaid utility bill.
In addition to what is listed here, the utility and gas companies that operate in Nevada more than likely have several other payment and billing options that they offer customers, including one-time payment accounts, online payments, other grant programs, various Shop & Pay locations in Northern Nevada, automatic monthly payment accounts, balance billing options, and pay-by-mail for customer convenience.
