Residents within city limits will more than likely receive their power from Orlando Utilities Commission. If this is the case, then the company does offer assistance to those that are struggling. The main program relies on contributions and donations from the community and is known as Project Share.
When funding is available, up to $500 can be provided as part of Project Care for paying utility bills. This is one of the main resources offered by the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC). As indicated, the funding comes from donations from individuals and businesses, so the scope is limited. This is offered for those that live with the city of Orlando and that receive service from OUC.
This is only for emergencies and is not a long term support system. To be eligible for any assistance, the customer will need to have had to have experienced a crisis or some emergency event. It can't have been caused by them and it needs to have caused them to not be able to pay their utility bills. Some examples of a qualified emergency event from Orlando Utilities Commission include your car broke down and you had an expensive repair bill, someone lost a job, someone lost a job, a child is sick and you now had to miss a substantial amount of work, a death of a spouse, or some other crisis.
When applying note that a family or individual does not need have to have low income or be poor to receive help. However what the company has found is that it usually works out that way because financially stable households in Orlando do not live from paycheck to paycheck. They will often have the funds needed to pay the bills in an emergency or crisis.
Project Care from OUC receives the money to provide this energy bill payment assistance through donations from its customers, including individuals and businesses. If you can afford to contribute and give back, please do so. Once you are stable and are back on your feet, you should show your appreciation to the program by giving back to the organization that gave to you in your time of need.

Orlando Utilities Commission allows people to donate in different ways. One quick and easy way to give back is to have your monthly electric bill rounded up to the nearest dollar each month. So if your bill is say $80.55, it will be rounded up to $81. OUC will then provide your excess funds (45 cents in this case) to the United Way. They will then use the funds to fund Project Care and help out others who need utility bill assistance. Your donation will also be tax deductible.
To apply for Project care, call the Central Florida United Way. They will provide more information. The agency can be reached by dialing 2.1.1. from any phone within the city of Orlando area. Staff are available literally 24 hours a day and can help you get you connected to local crisis assistance programs.
