Utility Bill Assistance

Pennies for Power utility assistance program from Lansing Board of Water Light

One of the main assistance programs offered by Lansing Board of Water Light is the Pennies for Power program. It relies on contributions from individuals and businesses in the community. It provides a way for people to give back and assist the less fortunate with paying their utility bills.

Thousands of  Lansing Board of Water Light contribute to Pennies for Power. It allows people to give as little money (or as much) as they would like. It is one of the key parts of Lansing Board of Water Light's overall plan to help the less fortunate and working poor. It assists many struggling customers avoid utility disconnections.

The fact is that donating even just a few pennies per month can have a very positive effect on the local Michigan community. This particular program, which is called Pennies for Power, provides a simple, painless, and convenient way for customers to give back. Thousands of people contribute and are helping needy and low income families in the central Michigan community. Those who donate will need to agree to round up their monthly utility bill to the next highest dollar each month.

What then happens is that the extra change goes to provide one-time utility shut-off protection for those customers (many of who have children or are seniors) that can’t make their utility bill payment. Tens of thousands of dollars are both contributed and paid out each year.

The Lansing Capital Area Community Services administers the Pennies for Power Program. The non-profit agency will both screen applicants and determine the level of support that each person will receive. Every dollar you donate goes to helping the less fortunate, as your contributions will not go to paying administrative fees or costs.

As part of the program, there are three main ways that you can help raise funds for utility shut-off protection for qualified low income families. They include the following.

One time donation can be made at any time with your next utility bill. Or many customers just decide to round up. This means that the utility company will round up your monthly utility bill to the next whole dollar. Or you can both Round up and add an extra Buck. Lansing Board of Water Light will both round up your monthly utility bill to the next whole dollar and add an additional $1 to that donation each and every month. All contributions can be tax deducible, and you will be provided an annual statement. Call Call Customer Service Department at 702-6006 to contribute or for more information.

Call the energy company, or  Capital Area Community Services, to apply for assistance. While funding and donation amounts do change each year, in general Pennies for Power helps hundreds of low-income families a year. While applicants will need to meet program terms, utility assistance is available to those that qualify.
