As with most energy providers, San Diego Gas & Electric offers the state of California Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA), LIHEAP and California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) Programs. However they also offer their own payment plans and arrangements for qualified low income customers.
The state of California Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) can provide San Diego Gas & Electric with reduced rates on their utility bills. Income qualifications need to be met. There are also multiple Tier levels in place, so that customers can qualify for various savings rates. Electricity rates are also lowered based on the customers total usage. The applying family also must have 3 or more members in their household in order to qualify.
Payment arrangements from San Diego Gas & Electric - As soon as you think you may struggling with paying your utility bill, call them. The utility provider will work with customers to try to find some type of arrangements that works for both the customer as well as the company. They may be able to create a payment arrangement plan, waive deposits or reconnection fees, and otherwise do whatever they can to both help the customer keep their power on, or reconnect their electricity if it was turned off. Do not hesitate and call as soon as possible.
SDG&E bills can be paid by the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program - A federal government funded program for the low income, elderly, families with children, and disabled.
California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) Program - Another discount program that covers the southern part of the state too. This can provide income qualified customers with up to a 35% savings on their monthly energy and gas bills. This can equal almost $300 per year for certain customers.

Neighbor-to-Neighbor Fund - San Diego Gas & Electric customers who are not qualified for any other local, federal, or charity programs may be able to get assistance from this program. Cash assistance of up to $200 can be paid out to people who are experiencing a temporary financial hardship. Funds are prioritized for seniors, families with children, and households with an elderly member. Read more.
San Diego Gas & Electric Energy Savings Assistance Program - Your home or apartment can be improved, and qualified low income customers can receive free energy conserving improvements to their residence. Updates can include new or repaired doors and windows, additional insulation, caulking, and weatherstripping to lower heating and cooling costs, and even free appliances like new, energy-efficient refrigerators, air conditioners, and lighting.
