Dollar Help is a Spire Energy utility bill assistance program that is offered to struggling Missouri customers. The resource is paid for using donations from the community, and the money comes from businesses, individuals, churches, charities, customers, and others. All of the funds are combined together in an effort to help struggling, low income families pay their utility bills, whether it is gas, heat, or electric.
Dollar Help is but one option from the company. The assistance is often combined with payment plans, LIHEAP cash grants, free weatherization/conservation measures and other forms of help. All of these Spire Energy options are combined to help struggling customers, senior citizens, and the less fortunate who live in Missouri.
Donations and credits for Spire Energy bills
As noted, the assistance program is paid for by the “general” public. Money is raised from a wide variety of sources, and 100% of what is donated goes to Dollar Help. Then all of those funds are paid out to deserving customers for their utilities. The donors are also able to take a credit on their state of Missouri as well as federal government income taxes.
Grants are not given to the applicant; so they do not receive cash. Rather a credit will be placed on the customers account. This will pay down, or reduce, a portion of any arrears on their energy bill. This will provide the customer some form of relief.

Maybe then, the low income family (or individual) that is a Spire Energy customer will have more time to get other forms of assistance. That may be the payment plan indicated above. Or maybe there is the government LIHEAP grants that can be obtained. Or the customer service team at the Missouri Spire Energy office will try to find some other resource for the customer.
When a credit is placed on the Spire Energy Missouri utility account, the amount will be minimal. It will often be tens of dollars (maybe slightly over $100), but the point is that the program will not pay several hundred or thousands of dollars for utility bills. The assistance is minimal.
It also takes time to get assistance from Dollar Help. This is not an emergency program like crisis LIHEAP, which can provide relief within as short as 24 hours. Instead it will take days to apply (and get approved) as well as processing time for the credit. There are also additional controls placed onto the program as it is a donation type service, so the goal is to ensure that the contributions are used wisely. This will help encourage further donations to Dollar Help is people and businesses know that their money is not being wasted.
Spire Energy has two different numbers to try, based on where the customer lives. In Eastern Missouri call 800-887-4173 or Western Missouri, dial 800-582-1234. Customer service representatives at both numbers can go over the term and conditions of the Dollar Help energy bill assistance donation program as well as other resources, such as payment plans. Or they can advise on how to contribute to it.
