In a limited number of instances, the program known as Sumter Electric Cooperative Angel Fund may be able to assist with certain utility costs, including electric or water bills. This is a donation service that is often called many names in the public. It can be referred to a Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Operation Round up, Pennies from Heaven and other names. No matter the reference, Angel Fund relies on contributions from the community to keep it operating.
In a typical year, hundreds of people as well as businesses donate to it. There may even be additional contributions from either employees at SECO or management. No matter who donates, all of the money is used strictly for assisting with utility bills. The funds raised will not pay for administrative expenses.
When it comes to receiving assistance, the number of customers assisted is very limited. The aid is also one time only and is for solving a short term crisis, such as postponing a disconnection for a defined period of time. If a customer of Sumter Electric Cooperative has more extensive, or long term needs, then customer service representatives will refer the client to another resource such as LIHEAP. The Angel Fund program was not intended for that.
Tax deductible donations can be made to Sumter Electric Cooperative Angel Fund as part of Pennies From Heaven. Anyone person or business can contribute money, and any dollar amount can be given. Whether it is a one time contribution or recurring amounts, the money is always greatly appreciated.
There are some instances in which the company will also donate money too use their trustee service. This can either be done on their own, or they may match other contributions from the public. In any case this too will help increase the number of Sumter Electric Cooperative customers that are supported with past due energy bills.
When applying for SECO Angel Fund, the process is extensive. Proof is needed, and this can range from copies of income statement (such as, pay stubs for the past 30 days), photo Ids, information on all household members, and more. This is a resources that is strictly administered. In some cases there will be a formal interview done as well.

One key to note is that only a small dollar amount of financial aid is available. What will occur is all of the money that is donated throughout the months is used to fund the program. Then, based on the qualifications of the applicant and whether any money is still available, the Sumter Electric Cooperative Angel Fund program may help paying with utilities.
Sumter Electric Cooperative Angel Fund was not intended to pay the entire energy bill. Instead it will pay a portion, thereby providing the customer time to find another solution. Whether it is applying for government aid, or making it through the difficult period, the Angel Fund is short term relied only.
